6. 3rd International Conference on e-Democracy (19/11/2008)

Recent developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have paved a world of advanced communication, intelligent information processing, and ubiquitous access to information and services. The ability to work, communicate, interact, conduct business, and enjoy digital entertainment virtually anywhere, is rapidly becoming common place due to a multitude of small devices, ranging from mobile phones and PDAs to RFID tags and wearable computers. The increasing number of connected devices and the proliferation of networks, provide no indication of a slowdown in this tendency. On the negative side, misuse of this same technology entails serious risks in various aspects, such as privacy violations, advanced electronic crime, cyber terrorism, and even enlargement of the digital divide. In extreme cases it may even threaten basic principles and human rights.

The aforementioned issues raise an important question: Is our society ready to adopt the technological advances in ubiquitous networking, next generation Internet, and pervasive computing? To what extent will it manage to evolve promptly and efficiently to a Next Generation Society, adopting the forthcoming ICT challenges?

The e-Democracy 2009 conference is dedicated to this issue. Through a comprehensive list of thematic areas under the title "Next Generation Society: Technological and Legal issues", the 2009 conference will try to stimulate discussions, create awareness, and provide information on the technological, ethical, legal, and political challenges ahead of us.

7. Launch of an international Task Force on Agricultural Learning Repositories (AgLR-TF) (25/02/2008)

An increased interest has been recently witnessed in the area of learning resources for agriculture and rural development. Discussions among key stakeholders (like the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, the World Agroforestry Centre, the Global Forum on Agricultural Research, and other distinguished organizations), gave a sparkle to the idea of bringing together people that are interested/involved in the development and/or operation of agricultural learning repositories.

A key conclusion of these discussions has been the importance of promoting the adoption of open standards and technologies for the design, development and deployment of agricultural learning repositories. This is expected to be a major enabler in order to further facilitate and extend the production, collection, organisation and usage of agricultural learning resources around the world.

To this direction, we decided to push forward this idea, through the creation of the Agricultural Learning Repositories Task Force (AgLR-TF): a task force of people/organization that are leading relevant efforts and who would be willing to contribute to this common cause. The Task Force is expected to join the forces of individuals and organizations from around the world, in order to provide guidance, standards, technologies, tools, recommendations, and best practices to interested stakeholders. In this way, we aim to promote and facilitate the idea of sharing and reusing learning resources on topics related to agriculture and rural development.

We welcome all interested individuals and/or organisations to join this Task Force. To do so, you just need to register yourself and/or your organisation through the web site of the AgLR-TF: http://aglr.aua.gr

10. Launch of the Rural-eGov project: Training SMEs of Rural Areas on Using e-Government Services (15/02/2007)

Rural-eGov (Training SMEs of Rural Areas on Using e-Government Services) is a collaborative European project funded by the Leonardo da Vinci programme and focused on improving the uptake of e-Government services in rural areas across Europe. It is a pilot project of 24 months duration, which started in October 2006.

The project will analyse the needs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the rural areas of Wales, Greece, Germany, Poland and Slovenia who have different types and levels of e-Government services and deployment. It will look at the degree of awareness within rural SMEs of such services and review their status in the participating countries.

A vocational training curriculum will also be developed in order to help the target SMEs use and exploit e-Government services. The curriculum will adopt a blended learning approach, using a combination of ICT based learning, as well as more traditional forms of learning such as seminars etc. Innovative and relevant e-learning content will be developed that will support various training scenarios which will be tested with rural SMEs. In addition, a Web based observatory will be designed which will provide a collection and categorisation of e-Government services that can support rural SMEs. As part of the project deliverables, a set of policy recommendations will also be developed for EU agencies, National Governments and Rural administrations.
